DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Applies sound engineering principles in the design of economical, safe, reliable, and efficient electric utility power systems.
- Prepares engineering studies, plans, specifications, evaluations, cost estimates, construction bills of material, construction drawings, permitting and assessments for a variety of engineering design projects, based on coordination with client, their engineers, architects, and contractors.
- Ensures design products are complete, accurate, include the appropriate level of detail, align with client standards, and meet all relevant regulations and code requirements. Participates in and ensures QC/QA procedures are followed.
- Occasionally partners directly with clients to form an understanding of and to define project scope, constraints, and design requirements, and provides support through construction completion.
- Works with other team members to inspect clients’ distribution grid system and provide damage reports during major outage restoration activities.
- Leads field activity to identify designed locations for future utility cable, wire, structures, and equipment.
- Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish non-routine tasks.
- Works somewhat autonomously on various projects.
- Provides support and assists others within the department as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of two years’ related utility design/drafting experience. Associate’s degree (A.A.) in engineering studies or similar from two-year college or technical school preferred.
- Overall understanding of the construction and operation of utility grid systems.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations for the proper selection of support structures, fixtures, cable, wire, and equipment to meet code requirements, local regulations, and client standards related to electrical and physical clearances and loading.
- Experience and familiarity with various types of utility distribution projects and the application of appropriate standards to design, as well as with various applicable utility codes and regulations.
- Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc. Preferably proficient in multiple software common to utility distribution design, such as AutoCAD, SpidaCalc, ArcGIS, PLS CADD, NISC, Partner, etc.
- English language skills: ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively communicate clear, concise verbal and written messages in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization in a professional manner.
- Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Reasoning skills: ability to clearly define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret and provide an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Organizational skills: ability to prioritize and organize tasks; ability to effectively plan and schedule time to meet deadlines and commitments; ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Remote connectivity device (e.g., smart phone, tablet, etc.) with data plan sufficient for company requirements, including multi-factor authentication, time and mileage tracking, expense reimbursement, e-mail, and virtual communications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily technical nature.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, frequently over uneven surfaces.
- Ability to occasionally sit in vehicle more than four hours.
- Ability to occasionally traverse uneven terrain, climb over or crawl under obstacles.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items and using hands to finger, handle or feel.
- Ability to sit and manipulate computer mouse up to eight hours per day.
- Ability to see clearly 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more; ability to identify and distinguish colors; ability to judge distances and form spatial relationships.
- Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to utilize required field engineering equipment to conduct regular assignments.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work is primarily in well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office/production setting with adequate ventilation and moderate noise.
- Occasional outdoor work, including performing strenuous physical activity and exposure to changing weather conditions (rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.).
- Requires use of protective and/or safety equipment.
WORK SCHEDULE
- Fixed schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Flexible schedule may be required while traveling or during summer months.
- May be required to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
- May be required to work non-standard hours and schedules that include on-call and callouts.
- Occasional extended workdays exceeding 12 hours.
- Occasional overnight travel required.
- Eligible to submit application telecommuting after 90 days.
