CEC is seeking a talented Civil/Structural Engineer Intern with an interest in bridge and transportation projects to join our Transportation Practice. This position will directly support CEC’s mission to eliminate aging infrastructure and drive community growth by helping to deliver quality solutions, design, and service to its clients. CEC’s Transportation team has a long history of state and local agency transportation services consisting of technical expertise from our Oklahoma offices and emerging offices in Texas and Arkansas.

This opportunity is an entry-level position for developing experience in structural engineering related to the design and maintenance of bridges, culverts, and retaining walls for transportation projects. In this role you will develop abilities in design and analysis as well as other structural engineering tasks for transportation structures and components associated with our client transportation needs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist experienced engineers as directed while developing specialized engineering skills.
  • Develop feasible engineering design alternatives to meet project requirements under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.
  • Perform structural calculations, modeling, analysis, and design under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. 
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, specifications, schedules and permitting under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.
  • Utilize computer software to create or assist in the creation of detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts, including, but not limited to, plan and profile views, cross sections, details and schedules, for the construction of bridge components, such as decks, steel and concrete beams, bearings, piers, abutments and foundations.
  • Calculate profile, dimensions, square footage, component specifications and material quantities using calculator or computer.
  • Participate in and ensure QC/QA procedures are followed. 
  • Maintain accurate design standards and procedures in assigned work.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other engineers, designers, and technicians on project activities.
  • Develop, foster, and maintain client relationships.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in civil or structural engineering from ABET accredited university; Master’s degree (M.S.) with emphasis in structural engineering is desirable.
  • Engineer Intern certification including successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail; ability to prioritize and organize tasks; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc. Knowledge of computer-aided drafting software is preferred.
  • Remote connectivity device (e.g., smart phone, tablet, etc.) with data plan sufficient for company requirements, including multi-factor authentication, time and mileage tracking, expense reimbursement, e-mail, and virtual communications. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a productive/technical nature. 
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, work with the fingers, perceive attributes of objects and materials.
  • Ability to sit up to eight hours per day.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk, including over uneven surfaces, for extended periods of time (field visits).
  • Ability to manipulate computer mouse up to eight hours per day.
  • Ability to see clearly 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more; ability to identify and distinguish colors; depth perception; and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office/production setting with adequate ventilation.
  • Moderate noise.
  • Occasional exposure to dust, dirt, weather conditions (field visits).

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Fixed schedule of 40 hours per week between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Occasional extended hours required as projects dictate.
  • Eligible to submit application for telecommuting after 90 days.
